On this day in 1985, Starship were sitting at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second week in a row with their hit single We Built This City. The track had moved into the top position on 16 November and continued to hold the spot through the week of 19 November as radio play and sales remained strong across the United States

The single was one of the band’s biggest commercial successes of the decade. It was written by Bernie Taupin, Martin Page, Dennis Lambert and Peter Wolf, and released as the lead track from the album Knee Deep in the Hoopla. During this period, music trade publications reported heavy rotation on major American radio networks and growing international attention for the band.
We Built This City continued its chart run throughout the month and helped cement Starship’s shift into a more mainstream pop sound following the group’s earlier line ups. The song went on to reach high positions in several countries and became one of the most recognisable singles of the mid eighties.
